Goblins & Gates: A Pen & Paper Musical is a brand NEW & ORIGINAL musical in development by Michael Campbell & Gonzalo Valencia-Peña.
The show revolves around a young game master who takes her friends and family on the roleplaying adventure of a lifetime to protect her father’s legacy - his game store. Our ultimate goal is to merge the wonderful worlds of musical theater and game-based world building into a project unlike any other!

"NMTC is the nation's premier program for the development of music theater, including book musicals, song cycles, operas, and hybrid pieces. Each year, NMTC rigorously reviews hundreds of submissions from a national submission pool before selecting a small number of exciting new works of music theatre to undergo an intensive development process with leading directors, music directors, dramaturgs, and actors, culminating in public script-in-hand staged readings. In keeping with the ethos of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the National Music Theater Conference strives to create a supportive, collaborative environment in which emerging and established artists alike are encouraged to explore, experiment, and take risks with their works-in-progress. This year’s selections join a long legacy of works that began their lives here in Waterford, including Avenue Q, Teeth, In the Heights, Violet, Nine, and more."

Wait... There's a Concept Album?!
Yep! The idea of having a concept album for the show came immediately after performing the first version of the show at Montclair State University. After that production, we knew that the show still needed to be revised. However, we also realized that because it's a fully original work/idea, it would be awesome for us to capture some of the magic the incredible cast helped us create! In this concept album you'll get the inside scoop on the creative process. In essence, here you get to listen to songs from characters that may no longer exist, lyrics that have been completely revised, keys that have been altered, or songs that simply don't exist anymore!

NEW Opening Number!
"It's Time to Play (Goblins & Gates)" is the brand new opening number we just wrote and recorded at Big & Tall Studios and we couldn't be more excited to share it with you! Here's a quick setup! It begins with David teaching his young daughter (our protagonist!) Wendy what G&G is all about. A little ways into the number, we have a time jump and realize that Wendy was reliving a fond memory back from when her father was alive. Now, she is excited that today might finally be the day to play with her younger brother DJ who has yet to play G&G. In short, Wendy is on a mission to share with her brother the magic she experienced playing the game with her dad and hopes that if she can play with her brother it will help strengthen their connection to one another and help them better deal with the loss of their father.
